The League of Purring Gentlefolk | A Love Letter to Tony Wood’s Most Distinguished Cats
“Macavity’s a Mystery Cat: he’s called the Hidden Paw—For he’s the master criminal who can defy the Law.”
— T.S. Eliot, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats
Introduction
There’s something deliciously suspicious about this trio of ceramic cats.
A teapot who stares just a little too intently. A milk jug who looks like he knows your secrets. A tabby who’s too charming to be trusted. Together, they form what I fondly call The League of Purring Gentlefolk — three vintage Tony Wood creations from Staffordshire, each brimming with personality, old-school mischief, and unapologetic charm.
As a collector (and self-confessed ceramic sleuth), I can’t help but be enchanted by these curious characters. So today, I’m shining a spotlight on their creator — and inviting you to meet the fabulous feline faces now proudly prowling my collection at LoveNickiX.co.uk.
Who Was Tony Wood?
Tony Wood Studios was a family-run pottery business based in Burslem, Staffordshire — one of the historic heartlands of British ceramics. The Wood family’s roots in pottery date back to the 1700s, but it was in the 1970s–80s that Tony Wood Studios became a household name for their animal-themed teapots and novelty jugs.
Beloved for their humour, quality, and expressive hand-painted faces, Tony Wood’s creations weren’t just functional — they were fun. Today, they’re highly collectable pieces of retro British charm, perfect for cat lovers and lovers of all things kitsch and curious.
Why Collectors Love Tony Wood Ceramics
Collectors today are drawn to Tony Wood pieces for three reasons:
-
Distinctive design – quirky, character-led, and unmistakably British
-
Craftsmanship – hand-decorated with attention to personality and finish
-
Nostalgia – they evoke a playful, simpler time, where teapots smiled back at you
Their whimsical nature makes them ideal statement pieces for kitchens, shelves, and cat-themed displays — and they still pour a pretty good cuppa, too.
Meet The Love Nicki x Cat Trio
Let’s meet the scoundrels themselves…
Dapper ‘Pussyfoot’ Cat Teapot
A tuxedo cat with a green bow tie and a watchful eye, Pussyfoot is a standout example of novelty pottery at its best. A joy to pour from and a conversation starter in any vintage collection.
Charming Black Cat Milk Jug
This glossy black cat sports a red collar and heart detail, with a cheeky open mouth ready to pour cream. He’s bold, he’s retro, and he’s definitely seen things.
Characterful Grey Tabby Cat Jug
Softly shaded with hand-painted stripes, this tabby is sweet and slightly wide-eyed. She might look innocent, but she’s part of the gang.
Final Thoughts
In a world of mass production, the work of Tony Wood still feels like a love letter to eccentricity — and that’s exactly what I try to celebrate at Love Nicki x. These pieces aren’t just décor — they’re characters, conversation starters, and little relics of British ceramic humour.
