A handsome 1920s John Hill & Co Shire horse in hand painted hollow cast lead, finished in rich chestnut brown with the strong proportions and presence of a traditional working horse.
Made by John Hill & Co, this larger scale figure captures the strength and character of the heavy horses that played such an important role in British farming. The Shire’s sturdy form and purposeful stance give the miniature a pleasing sense of weight and substance.
At 8.5 cm long and 6.5 cm high, it has a particularly impressive presence alongside the smaller farm figures from the period. The rich chestnut colouring gives this version a warmer appearance, while the hand painted finish has naturally mellowed with age to create an authentic vintage patina.
This horse forms part of a matching pair with the white Shire, and the two work particularly well together. Their generous scale and strong modelling make them a wonderful representation of the traditional working horses that were once such an important part of the British countryside.
A beautifully substantial early lead horse with rich colour, strong character and a lovely connection to Britain’s farming heritage.
