John Hill & Co 1920s Bull Lead Farm Figure

A striking 1920s John Hill & Co bull in hand painted hollow cast lead, with bold black and white colouring and an impressive larger scale that gives this early farm figure real presence.

This beautifully characterful bull is a fine example of early twentieth century British lead modelling, with its strong proportions, substantial form and hand painted finish capturing the solidity of a traditional farm animal. The black and white colouring has mellowed naturally over time, giving the surface an attractive aged patina.

John Hill & Co produced miniature farm and animal figures during the early twentieth century, and this example has a particularly pleasing sense of scale. Measuring approximately 9.5 cm in length, it is considerably larger than many of the tiny farm animals from the period, giving it a much stronger presence while retaining the charm of a hand painted miniature.

The original marking, stamped “COPYRT ENGLAND HILL & CO”, adds further interest and connects the piece directly to its maker and the history of British lead figure production. The simple subject is beautifully observed, with the bull’s sturdy stance and carefully modelled form giving it plenty of character.
