A charming vintage edition of Flowers of the Country Side from The Young Naturalist series, bringing together British wildflowers, detailed colour illustrations and the gentle nostalgia of a much loved old book.

Written by Cyril J. Lane and illustrated by Will H. Stevens, this delightful guide was published by Brockhampton Press during the 1940s to 1950s. Its illustrated pages reflect a time when discovering the natural world through books was an important part of growing up and exploring the countryside.

The original dust jacket adds to its vintage character, while the slim hardback format makes it particularly easy to display amongst other botanical and natural history books. It would sit beautifully on a country bookshelf, in a reading nook or alongside a collection of vintage nature guides.

Perhaps the most charming detail is the original inscription inside the front cover, reading “To Mac. With love from Grannie. 15/9/50.” Almost seventy five years old, this little message gives the book a wonderfully personal connection and a glimpse into the life of one of its earlier owners.

More than simply a botanical guide, this is a book with its own small story, combining British natural history, vintage illustration and a touching piece of family history.

A lovely old book to browse, with wildflowers on its pages and a little story of its own.
