A wonderfully characterful 1930s Britains farm figure depicting a traditional carter with whip, dressed in a tan smock and hat with a small red neckerchief adding a lovely touch of colour.
Made by Britains Ltd as part of the Model Home Farm Series, this little hollow cast lead figure captures the everyday characters of rural Britain in miniature. The Home Farm range was introduced in 1923 and reflected Britains’ interest in creating detailed scenes of countryside life, populated by farmers, workers and animals.
One of the particularly interesting details on this example is the articulated right arm, designed to swivel at the shoulder. The original green painted lead base is also present, giving the figure a pleasing sense of completeness and helping bring the little carter to life when standing.
The hand painted finish has naturally softened with age, with areas of paint loss that reveal the history of this pre war figure. There is something especially appealing about these early Britains figures in their small scale, where clothing, pose and tiny painted details give each character an individuality of its own.
A fascinating little survivor from 1930s Britain, capturing the character of rural working life in just a few centimetres.
