Stories, puzzles, illustrations and a little piece of pre war childhood, preserved in the pages of an original 1938 Crazy Cococubs magazine.

This original Issue No. 23 of the Crazy Cococubs Magazine was published by Cadbury Bournville in April 1938. Created for members of the Crazy Cococubs Club, the magazine brought the colourful characters of the Cococubs to life through stories, puzzles, illustrations, competitions and other activities.

The Cococubs were an imaginative part of Cadbury’s advertising during the 1930s, creating a world that children could actively take part in rather than simply see in an advertisement. Magazines such as this one give a fascinating insight into how that world was developed, and how Cadbury encouraged children to collect, read and engage with its characters.

Issue No. 23 is filled with the kind of illustrated period detail that makes original printed ephemera so appealing today. The combination of storytelling and advertising offers a particularly evocative glimpse into childhood before the war and the remarkable creativity behind Cadbury’s promotional work.

A wonderful piece of 1930s printed history, preserving a small but vivid chapter of the Cococub story.
