Tiny, dapper and wonderfully detailed, Peter Penguin is a miniature gentleman from the imaginative world of the 1930s Cadbury Cococubs.
This original Peter Penguin figure dates from the 1930s and was designed by renowned British illustrator and character designer Ernest Aris for Cadbury Bournville. Hand painted in lead, Peter is dressed in his distinctive red trousers and jacket with a crisp shirt and bow tie, giving this tiny figure an extraordinary amount of personality.
The Cococubs were created around Cadbury’s cocoa advertising during the 1930s, bringing together a cast of named characters with their own distinctive appearances and personalities. Ernest Aris played an important role in developing their illustrated character, giving the little figures the expressive quality that made them so memorable.
At just 3.5 cm tall and only half a centimetre wide, Peter is particularly delicate. His tiny painted details reward a closer look, from his smart little outfit to his unmistakable silhouette.
He would be lovely displayed alongside other Cococubs, amongst vintage toys and childhood memorabilia, or simply given his own little place in a cabinet where his diminutive scale can be appreciated.
A beautifully small piece of British design history, and perhaps one of the most dapper characters in the Cococub family.
