Brightly painted and full of personality, Pat Pelican is a wonderfully cheerful little character from the 1930s Cadbury Cococub story.
This original Pat Pelican figure was produced by Britains Ltd for Cadbury Bournville during the 1930s. Hand painted in lead, he wears a smart red and blue outfit with distinctive pink beak and feet, giving this tiny figure an unmistakable appearance.
The Cococubs brought a cast of colourful characters into Cadbury’s advertising during the 1930s, creating a playful world around its cocoa products. Their miniature figures are a lovely reflection of the period, when illustrated characters, confectionery and childhood collecting became closely intertwined.
Pat’s bright colouring makes him particularly appealing, while his tiny scale gives him the quiet presence of an object that rewards a closer look. He would sit beautifully alongside other Cococubs, vintage toys or early British miniatures, or bring a small flash of colour to a shelf or cabinet.
