1930s Cadbury Cococub Granny Owl Lead Figure, Ernest Aris and Britains

With her round spectacles and wonderfully wise expression, Granny Owl is one of the most distinctive little characters in the Cococub family.

This original Granny Owl figure dates from the 1930s and was designed by renowned British illustrator and character designer Ernest Aris, before being produced by Britains Ltd for Cadbury Bournville. Cast in hollow lead and hand painted, she has a wonderfully individual appearance, from her spectacles to her slightly eccentric expression.

The Cococubs were created around Cadbury’s cocoa advertising during the 1930s, introducing a cast of named characters with their own personalities and distinctive designs. Ernest Aris brought an illustrated quality to many of these characters, helping to create the playful world that appeared across Cadbury’s promotional material.

Granny Owl has retained much of her original painted finish, with gentle surface wear and light paint loss consistent with her age. Her small scale and unmistakable appearance make her particularly lovely displayed amongst other Cococubs, vintage animal figures or a collection of early British miniatures.

A wonderfully individual piece of 1930s character design, with almost a century of history behind those tiny spectacles.
